This. Is. KRYPTON!!!
It had been one of the hottest jobs in Hollywood for over a year, but last night it was announced that Zack Snyder would be the man to direct the first Superman movie since 2006’s Superman Returns.
Although Returns garnered generally positive reviews (with a five star review from Empire) disappointing box office earnings meant that a return for director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) was unlikely. After enjoying both huge commercial and critical success with 2008’s The Dark Knight, director Christopher Nolan was asked by Warner Bros. to act as a creative consultant for a new Superman movie, and now he seems to have found his man.
Although a divisive figure in the geek community, Zack Snyder is a safe figure to handle as large a property as Superman. He has experience of adapting comic books with 300 and Watchmen, he has an undeniably unique visual style and he brings his films in on time and on budget (an important factor when a rumoured release date of Christmas 2012 is only two years away).
Of course Snyder is also a great action director, and hopefully audiences will finally get the epic, insane action scenes that the Superman movies have so far failed to deliver upon. Even though Superman Returns delivered the thrills with a superb plane crash rescue, it felt like a prelude to seeing what Superman could really do. Just look at some of the craziness within the trailer for Snyder’s next film, Sucker Punch, and try not to be excited at the thought of what he could do with the Man of Steel. With the right script behind it, Snyder’s Superman could be spectacular.
With the main creative team now in place, attention will focus on the right actor to don the blue tights. As a huge fan of his work in Superman Returns, a second outing for Brandon Routh would be welcome, especially after a scene-stealing turn as Vegan powered mega-dick Todd Ingram in Scott Pilgrim vs. the Word. Yet with everyone from Mad Men’s John Hamm to Will Smith being rumoured for the part it seems that it will be some time before anyone is locked in.
