Epic Citadel: A sign of things to come?

Released for iPad, iPhone 4 and 3GS last week, Epic Citadel is an app from Gears of War developers Epic Games, created as a graphical showcase for just what Apple’s tiny hand-helds can do. Undoubtedly impressive, it runs using Unreal Engine 3, a software system used for a multitude of popular console games, including Batman: Arkham Asylum, Borderlands and Mass Effect.

The potential this opens up for gaming on iOS, Apple’s cross-platform operating system used by iPhones and iPads, is huge. Apple has already kick-started a mini-revolution in gaming through the app store, and the ability to provide console-quality graphics on such small devices will no doubt have big boys Sony and Microsoft taking notice.

The app is available for free now, and can be found here. It really has to be seen to be believed.
